Letter to the ministry of gender and children affairs

21 11 2009

Dear madam Mirugi, first of all, I want to congratulate your ministry on the great efforts they have put to address the problems  the children of this nation face.

I, ”Martin Mwaura,” having come from under privileged society, my problems have not been catered for appropriately by your ministry and the government of this nation at large.

My friends lives have been ruined by the intake of drugs, I would have fallen into the prey, but it is just that Undugu Society of Kenya came in at the right time and saved me from joining the group of my friends.

My friends have formed groups called ”genge,”only meant for warriors as they refer to it, they meet in the evening at a place called ”kambi,”where they smoke all sorts of cigarettes and the wisdom weed called ”Janja weed.”

Madam minister, I am afraid this trend my friends are following is not only dangerous to their health, but will also affect the society at large, for they will be forced to steal so as to make ends meet.

Drug abuse has made them be rebellious be it towards the school authority but also towards their parents, leading to high rate of school drop-outs and many of them running away from homes.

Madam minister, what we lack is someone to come and address the youths on the dangers of drug abuse and one who will give them something alternative to do in life.

We want the government to set up a peer education center within slum areas, at the moment we feel abandoned by our very own government, we do not want to develop an attitude that slum dwellers are lesser than others.

Madam minister, please make it real,we want you to come and pay us a visit so that you may see what type of life we lead here in the slums.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Mwaura.

Drug abuse has led to demolishing of visions of many youths. I have seen a lot and pains in piles of miles leaving my heart palpitating like the East African Tom-Tom Drums.

The government should establish peer education of guiding and counseling in various part of the country and this will help the youths to understand the bad effects of drugs. Can drug abuse ever end and all of us be righteous youths.?
