Family Problems In My Community

21 11 2009

In each and every household, it is always the wish of every child to have both loving parents staying together.

For each and every domestic violence that takes place in the presence of a child, it ends up affecting him/her psychologically.

In my neighborhood, just a stone throw away, there used to live a man  who had a family of two girls and three boys and a wife.

His beautiful wife was a drunkard who would drink alcohol to an extent of forgetting the names of her own children. Her behaviour was a big nuisance to her husband as fro him ,he was a teetotaler who worked so hard, day in, day out, to sustain the family’s needs.

He tried all that a gentle man like him could do by trying to restrain the wife from taking alcohol, but all his efforts bore no fruits. One day,he said that, enough was enough and he wanted to divorce his wife once and for all. Before he took that bold step, he decided to consult his friend, on the best way forward.

The following day, he woke up very early in the morning  and went to his friend’s place. Luckily, he found him on the doorstep ready to leave for upcountry, but he accepted  to spare some minutes with him and listen to what had brought him.

After telling him that he wanted to divorce his wife, his friend felt sorry for him and advised him not to make that mistake as the children were going to suffer most.

He went further and told him,the importance of both parents in a family is that, the children will be in a position to get attachment from the parents, care and responsibility from both parents and as they grow up, they will also be responsible parents and role models in the society at large.

It took hours before the man could get convinced, and after thorough soul-searching, he accepted to give his wife some ample time to change her behavior as it was not possible to change something habitual within a day.

Most of the children whose parents have divorced, grow into adults full of fear that they may encounter such difficulties later in life and end up not entering into marriage union.

This is a great challenge to the parents to always put the children welfare into consideration, as they are the cream of each and every society.

Letter to the ministry of gender and children affairs

21 11 2009

Dear madam Mirugi, first of all, I want to congratulate your ministry on the great efforts they have put to address the problems  the children of this nation face.

I, ”Martin Mwaura,” having come from under privileged society, my problems have not been catered for appropriately by your ministry and the government of this nation at large.

My friends lives have been ruined by the intake of drugs, I would have fallen into the prey, but it is just that Undugu Society of Kenya came in at the right time and saved me from joining the group of my friends.

My friends have formed groups called ”genge,”only meant for warriors as they refer to it, they meet in the evening at a place called ”kambi,”where they smoke all sorts of cigarettes and the wisdom weed called ”Janja weed.”

Madam minister, I am afraid this trend my friends are following is not only dangerous to their health, but will also affect the society at large, for they will be forced to steal so as to make ends meet.

Drug abuse has made them be rebellious be it towards the school authority but also towards their parents, leading to high rate of school drop-outs and many of them running away from homes.

Madam minister, what we lack is someone to come and address the youths on the dangers of drug abuse and one who will give them something alternative to do in life.

We want the government to set up a peer education center within slum areas, at the moment we feel abandoned by our very own government, we do not want to develop an attitude that slum dwellers are lesser than others.

Madam minister, please make it real,we want you to come and pay us a visit so that you may see what type of life we lead here in the slums.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Mwaura.

Drug abuse has led to demolishing of visions of many youths. I have seen a lot and pains in piles of miles leaving my heart palpitating like the East African Tom-Tom Drums.

The government should establish peer education of guiding and counseling in various part of the country and this will help the youths to understand the bad effects of drugs. Can drug abuse ever end and all of us be righteous youths.?

The Cream of the society

21 11 2009

Since time immemorial,I have always grown up believing that hard work pays and the hardworking people are always rewarded by the Almighty.

Privalyne is the name  they call me. I am a member of Mitumba youths Association (M.Y.A). M.Y.A is a youth group that is based in South C at a place called  ‘Mabatini’.

by martin mwaura

In M.Y.A we carry out various activities such as, garbage collection, peer-to-peer education and dramatization. In M.Y.A we are trying very hard to see that our fellow youths  have hope in their  daily lives.

We are involved in  other activities such as, Family health care, drug abuse education among many others in our community.

We usually do garbage collection on Saturdays and we have a list of various clients that we collect garbage from. We sell to them plastic garbage bags.

When the garbage bags are full, we collect all of them and use a hand cart to transport the collected garbage to a particular place that we have allocated for disposing off the garbage. There after, burning take place. We sell each garbage bag at ten  shillings.

With all the activities we get involved in,it has helped the members of our association to not only grow spiritually strong, but also grow mentally, socially and economically strong, as we struggle to help other youths in the society to be self-reliant.

Our motto: is to strive much and help in keeping the environment clean.

In M.Y.A, we emphasize on,”Talk Less And Put Things into Action.”
